Un album che esplora mondi sonori differenti, spaziando tra repentini cambi di ritmo e di scenario, atmosfere free, azzardi compositivi, brani più classici dall’innato senso melodico, composizioni per quintetto e composizioni scritte per il contrabbasso solo in cui vengono utilizzate tecniche avanguardistiche. Si presenta così One Mile Away nuovo progetto discografico del contrabbassista Stefano Battaglia in uscita il 19 febbraio per l’etichetta Emme Record Label. Si tratta di un lavoro fresco, dove narrazione e azione si susseguono rapidamente, e in cui si respira a pieni polmoni l’aria della Grande Mela, dove l’artista risiede da tempo, unita a una freschezza compositiva che trasuda in tutti i brani. Questo lavoro alterna brani in quintetto, dalla grande energia, con altri in cui melodie intense, drammatiche e cariche di emotività acquistano un ruolo centrale. C’è anche spazio per il contrabbasso solo dove Battaglia utilizza con maestria le tecniche dell’archetto, pizzicato, pizzicato di armonici, tape machine ed effect delay, creando un ponte sonoro tra passato e presente.

One Mile Away è un disco moderno, aperto a nuovi linguaggi e in cui il basso acquista spesso un ruolo preponderante. Tutto questo senza tralasciare un rispetto profondo anche per quelle tradizioni che spesso rappresentano lo spunto perfetto per andare avanti e per mischiare le carte in tavola. Non a caso hanno partecipato alla lavorazione di questa opera prima alcuni astri nascenti del panorama jazzistico statunitense quali Milena Casado al flicorno, che ha dalla sua collaborazioni con Terry Lyne Carrington, Kris Davis, Vijay Iyer, Jorge Rossy, Morgan Guerin al sax tenore, che ha invece collaborato con Terry Lyne Carrington, Aaron Parks, Esperanza Spalding, Nicholas Payton), Roberto Acosta al piano, Avery Logan alla batteria.

In questo disco ogni composizione disegna un quadro ben preciso, fatto di musica, colori ed esperienze di vista, con un messaggio chiaro, che la felicita non è nascosta negli avvenimenti futuri o in qualcosa che ancora dovrà accadere.

Quando avrò quel lavoro, allora sarò felice… e poi… Quando avrò una nuova casa, allora sarò felice… poi… Quando avrò una nuova macchina, sarò felice… Quando avrò una fidanzata/un fidanzato/una moglie/un marito, sarò felice… Quando comprerò questo o quello, sarò felice… Quando andrò in vacanza, sarò felice… Inseguire sempre la felicità, senza mai riuscire ad afferrarla. Basta! La felicità è qui, in mezzo a noi. Siamo vivi e viviamo questa vita, questo mondo ogni giorno, e anche se è solo per un’ora, ne vale davvero la pena. Vivi il presente, vivi l’adesso. One Mile Away is an album that explores different sonic worlds, moving through sudden shifts in rhythm and scenery, free-form atmospheres, compositional risks, and more classic pieces with an innate melodic sensibility. The record alternates quintet compositions with works written for solo double bass, where avant-garde techniques play a central role.
This is how One Mile Away, the new recording project by double bassist Stefano Battaglia, presents itself. The album will be released on February 19 by Emme Record Label.

It is a fresh and dynamic work, where narration and action follow one another at a fast pace, breathing in the air of the Big Apple—where the artist has been living for some time—combined with a compositional freshness that permeates every track. The album moves seamlessly between high-energy quintet pieces and others in which intense, dramatic, and emotionally charged melodies take center stage. There is also space for solo double bass performances, where Battaglia masterfully employs bowing techniques, pizzicato, harmonic pizzicato, tape machine, and delay effects, creating a sonic bridge between past and present.

One Mile Away is a modern album, open to new musical languages, in which the double bass often assumes a leading role—without ever losing a deep respect for tradition, which here becomes the perfect starting point for moving forward and reshuffling the deck. It is no coincidence that several rising stars of the U.S. jazz scene took part in this debut work: Milena Casado on flugelhorn (who has collaborated with Terry Lyne Carrington, Kris Davis, Vijay Iyer, and Jorge Rossy), Morgan Guerin on tenor saxophone (with collaborations including Terry Lyne Carrington, Aaron Parks, Esperanza Spalding, and Nicholas Payton), Roberto Acosta on piano, and Avery Logan on drums.

In this album, each composition paints a clearly defined picture—made of music, colors, and lived experiences—conveying a simple and powerful message: happiness is not hidden in future events or in something that has yet to happen.
